Building a Regional Fabric
One Thread At a Time
ABOUT US

Golden State Linen is proud to be the only small-scale processor of flax in the United States. We grow, harvest, and process the fiber on our 3.75 acre farm just outside of Chico, in the heart of Northern California. Our crop grows in healthy, carbon-capturing soil that we carefully tend, having worked hard to restore it to health after its previous life as a chemically-treated almond orchard.
We are a socially and environmentally responsible organization, rooted in our local community and local fibershed. Chico State University recently acknowledged our efforts, recognizing us as mentor farmers in their Regenerative Farming Program. We host events, workshops, and volunteer opportunities on our farm, all aimed at revitalizing flax production in the region and preserving knowledge of this vital craft for generations to come.
Whether you’re a farmer, a weaver, an artisan, or an environmentalist, we want to connect with you! There’s something for everyone in the process of transforming flax to linen.
GROWING COLLABORATIVELY
We are leveraging partnerships and opportunities built over the past 14 years to further develop regenerative and economically viable fiber flax production through pilot projects in Northern California.
We document our soil and ecosystem changes resulting from regenerative agriculture production methods, and seek to engage more members of our regional farming community in demonstration and field days.
On our farm, we are also working to test the viability of newly designed small-scale mechanical processing equipment, as well as develop new prototype products (like flax/cotton and flax/wool yarn blends) alongside regional processing and farming partners.

OUR FUTURE
Help support local fiber!
We’ve worked hard to bring this land back to life, and now we’re asking for your assistance. Golden State Linen is announcing a Capital Campaign under the umbrella of the North Valley Foundation, with the aim of creating a thriving research center for flax fiber and natural dyes in Northern California.
We’re proud to partner with the Regenerative Agriculture and Engineering departments at California State University, Chico, developing new processing techniques and deepening our collective knowledge of the possibilities for regional, regenerative flax production. We’ve got big goals: acquiring our own flax harvesting machine from Europe, increasing the scope of our processing abilities, and one day purchasing land that will serve as an oasis of local, climate-beneficial flax production for years to come.
